Common Causes of Data Loss on Mac OS X - Learn to avoid

Computers are undoubtedly the inseparable part of our personal as well as professional lives, especially when you are connected to the world through them using Internet. Computer and the Internet together make an imaginary world that facilitates high-speed data exchange among users around the world over emails. In addition to these online features, computers feature data input, processing, output, and storage facilities, which make them a handy tool to rely upon.
Today, Macs are termed as excellent computers, as they embed high-class hardware components to run the fastest and highly secure Macintosh operating system (i.e. Mac OS X). The excellence of Mac OS X, at a certain level, relies on Disk Utility – the Mac inbuilt disk management tool. Disk Utility facilitates formatting a new drive (both HDD and SDD), drive partitioning, managing, imaging, cloning, and repairing. Since system files and user data must be stored collectively on the hard drive, Mac OS X allows partitioning its hard drive into several volumes. These volumes facilitate storing different types of data separately.
Besides, one can install multiple operating systems on separate volumes on the same hard drive. If we talk about security of the data, Mac OS X is secure enough. However, Mac users still come across data loss scenarios due to software, hardware, and human errors. Fortunately, Mac data recovery software are available on the Internet, which facilitate recovering lost and inaccessible data without modifying a bit of your valuable information.

Data Loss and its Causes

You must be creating at least one or more files every day on your Mac. Based on what type of data you save in these files, they can be vital.
How would you react if you lose one or more of these files unknowingly? You may not even want to imagine, as data loss is the most painful situation experienced by almost everyone. Therefore, following are the major causes of data loss on Mac:
  • Accidental Deletion: Accidental deletion of a precious file or document is the most common scenario that Mac users come across. For example, you are going to delete some older college presentations that are stored along with a few new ones. However, by mistake, you delete one of the new ones that were not supposed to be deleted.
  • Accidental Formatting: Formatting a Mac partition deletes everything stored on it. Once you format a disk, you are not able to recover anything unless you use Mac data recovery software. For example, you launch Disk Utility to format a volume, but mistakenly you format any other volume. Such accidental formatting of Mac volume results in huge amount of data loss.
  • Volume Header Corruption: In Mac OS X, every volume has a header associated with it, which stores volume’s information (such as volume creation date, modification date, and volume’s size). This volume header is very sensitive in nature and may get corrupt due to even a minor mishap. If the header of a Mac volume gets corrupt, that particular volume may no longer be accessible. Such a volume appears like a dead icon that cannot be accessed.
  • File System Corruption: Mac OS X formats its hard drive with HFS+ (Mac OS Extended (Journaled)) file system. Though this file system is smart enough, it is equally prone to corruption due to power failures, dirty or forced system shutdown, and many other reasons. In case the file system on Mac drive gets corrupt, data stored on the hard drive may no longer be accessible.

How to Recover Lost Data on Mac

If you lose your precious data on Mac, you can easily recover it using data recovery software for Mac. These software perform deeper scan on the Mac drive and recover all lost and inaccessible data on the drive. Based on how your data is lost and which software you are using, you can recover all data intact.
Tip: As soon as you realize about data loss, avoid using that disk.
